Longmeadow football special teams and rushing attack outpace Putnam 40-28.
SPRINGFIELD- The Longmeadow Lancers (4-3, 3-2) received multiple big plays from their special teams unit en route to a victory over the Putnam (1-6, 0-6) on the Beavers’ senior night.
On a cold night where passing yards were at premium, Longmeadow's special teams gave their rushing attack short fields to operate. Longmeadow blocked a punt, recovered an onside kick, and had two big kick returns, one for a touchdown. All four plays happened in the first half and helped accumulate a 26-14 halftime lead.
The Lancers scored first on a 3 yard run by Max Chipouras with 8:15 left in the first quarter. After Longmeadow responded with a Milton Crawford one yard touchdown, Alex Calabrese returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown and a 14-6 lead.
Putnam responded again, tying the game at 14 with one second left in the opening quarter on a 1 yard touchdown run by Jaleel Kyles. However, Longmeadow’s Chipouras returned the kickoff to the Putnam 40, setting up a 31 yard touchdown run by Keegan Barry.
Barry had two touchdowns and 132 yards on 7 carries. Chipouras helped shoulder the rushing load with 17 carries for 176 yards and had three touchdowns.
